Chapter Fourteen

Unfortunately, Sylvia refused to explain any further regarding Father Callen. We sat inside my Lotus watching the sun’s last glimmer of redness on the horizon disappear as the stars came out.

“If I told you the whole truth, you wouldn’t believe me,” Sylvia said in exasperation. She sat next to me with her hands folded in her lap and stared down at them.

“Please look at me,” I said, and immediately she cast her sad eyes at me, as if she were about to cry. “You can tell me anything you want and I promise I’ll believe it.”

“Oh no!” Sylvia exclaimed. “That would be even worse.”

“Now, how do you think I feel, when you tell me that this priest is out to kill you, and you won’t tell me why, and I’ve got to worry that you might be right? If he really is after you, then why don’t we just call the police and have him arrested?”

“There’s nothing to arrest him for. He hasn’t broken any laws here in this country yet, and I don’t want to become involved with the police at all. How would you like it if they deported me?”

“I don’t know what I’d do then. Maybe I’d have to move to England.”

Sylvia’s expression brightened at my remark. She gave me a kiss on the cheek, then leaned her body against mine. “I should be safe now. He can’t hurt me when I’m with you. If only I had you around all the time.”

“That’s okay with me,” I said quickly. “I’ll spend as much time with you as you want.”

“But what about during the day, when I sleep?”

I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t know what to do about that. You don’t want me to sleep with you, and I work during the day, so that takes care of that, doesn’t it?”

“Things will be changing soon enough,” Sylvia responded, but didn’t bother clarifying just what would be changing.

When we reached the apartment building, I didn’t know Sylvia’s intentions. At 9 p.m., it was too early to go to sleep, but I didn’t know whether to suggest stopping at my apartment. I didn’t have to wonder long. With her arm around mine, she led me straight to her apartment. “I hope you didn’t think I was teasing when I said your benefits start tonight!” She unlocked the door and we walked in.

“That’s great, but I wouldn’t want to take advantage of you,” I said, noting how much Sylvia had to drink earlier.

Sylvia’s mouth dropped open in disbelief. “You take advantage of me? Could a drunk woman do this?” She suddenly did a handstand and held it in perfect balance, not wavering in the slightest.

I rushed over to help in case she fell over, but her balance didn’t falter. At the same time, I expected her gown to slip down over her head and expose her underwear, but because the gown fit so snugly, it didn’t move, so revealed nothing underneath. “It’s a good thing you didn’t try that at the wedding,” I said.
